According to the Japanese business outlet Nikkei, Nintendo’s planned future console could run on the Android operating system. Translated by a neogaf user, they claim Nintendo is “prepared to embrace a more open platform with Android, to allow developers more flexibility in making content that can also be on smartphones and tablets.” The user says they want to do this because a turning point occurred within the company when third parties abandoned Nintendo’s WiiU one by one. The upcoming console, codenamed “NX”, goes hand-in-hand with the news that Nintendo plans to make a bigger presence in the mobile market. So it stands to reason that these rumors could mean something.

However, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has shot down those rumors. “There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX”, a spokesperson for Nintendo said. While most can see positives having Nintendo operate on Android, they said it could raise possible security issues which may not mesh well with Nintendo’s strategy of appealing to non-core gaming audiences such as children, women and families. So far, details are still very scarce for the NX, but more news is set to come out next year.
