Today, Nintendo announced that they are finally profitable again. The 3DS, after a very slow start, is starting to sell better and helped pull Nintendo into the black. The net profit of Nintendo was reported at about 160 million dollars. This sounds like a lot, but when the Wii was selling like hot cakes, that number was in the billions. Either way, the video game giant is getting its act together, so it seems.

However, as positive as the profitability reports were today, the WiiU and the 3DS are not meeting sales expectations. The Wii U was expected to sell 5.5 million units by March, but current sales through December are standing at 3.06 million. The 3DS was expected to sell 17.5 million units, but only sold 12.71 million units. Both of these numbers led to Nintendo revising its expected sales numbers for the year. The WiiU is now expected to sell 4 million units and the 3DS is now expected to sell 15 million. DS and Wii targets have also been lowered, but those won’t contribute to the bottom line as much as Nintendo’s new products.
