When you think of the physical ways that people interact with video games, people tend to think of the traditional game controller. The traditional model has been around for a long time, but now that technology has improved significantly, the ways in which we control our games is changing dramatically. One of these products that has the potential to change the way we game, at least once in a while, is the Sphero 2.0.

The Sphero 2.0 is a game in its own right, but more than that, it has the ability to be used as a bluetooth controller for certain iOS games. Currently, the Sphero 2.0 can be used with its own limited suite of games, but that suite includes some classics like bowling and golf. However, there are a number of other titles available that offer gamers a different, and certainly more interesting, look at controlling the video games they play. The Sphero 2.0 can be used in some augmented reality games that take advantage of the iPad / iPhone camera while providing an independent gaming experience. Games like the Rolling Dead challenge players to roll the Sphero around while the game creates zombie obstacles on the screen that the player must roll over with the Sphero. Another game, Sharky the Beaver, transforms the Sphero 2.0 into, well, Sharky the Beaver. You can control Sharky from your iOS device as he stomps around your house. Games like this, though simple in execution, expand how we play games and could lead to more interesting uses of technology in gaming applications.

Overall, the Sphero 2.0 is an interesting development in gaming. While it isn’t going to replace your gaming console anytime soon, it does give us a glimpse of what we can do when we think outside of the box. Augmented reality is an up-and-coming technology that will surely permeate through the gaming space at one point or another. However, as scary as that sounds, you can get a small taste of what it would be like by using the Sphero 2.0.

For those interested in checking it out for themselves, the Sphero 2.0 is now available by going to the official website at http://www.gosphero.com
