SkullCandy originally set out to make high quality audio products for action-sport athletes. With SkullCandy‘s massive growth in the action-sports area, it has now branched out to reach all audiophiles, including gamers. This rapidly growing division has produced some high-end headsets aimed and priced for the mid-tier spender. SkullCandy has further expanded this not-so-niche market by releasing a headset specifically designed to be a must-have for any fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise: the SLYR AC4 headset.

Sound: 9

SkullCandy has done something unique for the AC headset when compared to the other SLYR headsets in their line up. This headset has three different EQ settings specifically designed to work best within the  Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag environment. The cross corporate synergy between SkullCandy and Ubisoft has paid off with this headset’s ability to enhance the AC4 experience. The over-the-ear design also helps to enhance the quality of the sound by hindering ambient noise from interfering with the game. While some gamers may find the use of many wires cumbersome or inconvenient, using a wire provides a higher quality audio experience.

Features: 9

The features provided to purchasers of this headset are numerous. Firstly, the design pays homage to the series by placing the official AC logo directly on the headset. Additionally, the graphics and color scheme are inspired by the virtual reality machine known as the “Animus”. This is a wonderful addition if you are a fan of the series, and, honestly, if you’re not, why would you purchase a headset made specifically for Assassin’s Creed?

The headset itself features an incredible flip-up boom mic. This microphone allows for clear voice pick-up and minimizes the annoying background noises that we all hear when playing with someone online using a sub-par headset.

Value:  7.5

SkullCandy has done a wonderful job in providing gamers with a high performance value headset. Currently, the SLYR AC4 headset retails for only $89.99 on SkullCandy’s website. This headset will work on your PS3 or Xbox 360 via a component hook-up. If you’re using an HDMI connection from your console to your TV, you are out of luck. This headset is unable to pass audio without the component connection. This has been the only negative I could find when using this device.

However, the SLYR headset will still connect with your PC via USB, and it will even connect to your cell phone, further increasing its value. If you have yet to hear, Assassin’s Creed is coming out with another installment specifically designed for mobile devices. The microphone works perfectly, so it’s no problem if your gaming is interrupted by a call from your mother.

Ease of Use/ Comfort:   9

SkullCandy has done the less tech-savvy a great service by providing fool proof instructions to set this headset up. If the instructions do not help, SkullCandy has posted YouTube videos that provide step-by-step instructions for connecting to a  Xbox 360 or a PS3. Once you’ve connected the device, switching between the 3 EQ modes is as simple as moving a slider up and down. The GMX controller panel will quickly and independently raise or lower both the actual game play and the online voice chat volume.

The SLYR headset is made to endure long hours on your ears. In-ear headsets can fatigue one’s ear after an extended gaming session. SkullCandy equipped this headset with a soft, lush, over-the-ear design that allows gamers to never have to leave their seat.

Overall: 8.5

Overall, the SkullCandy SLYR AC4 headset is a must-have for fans of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise. The headset provides gamers with a high-quality sound and a top-notch microphone. Because of this headset’s ability to be used across home and mobile-based gaming platforms, the device is definitely worth its $89.99 price point.
