At San Diego’s Comic-Con Expo, Epic Games revealed that their upcoming title Fortnite will be the first Unreal Engine 4 game.  Fortnite is a post-apocalyptic cooperative survival-action game that operates on a day and night cycle.  By day, players will scavenge and gather parts to set up traps and fortify their bases.  However once dusk sets players will be tasked to defending their encampments from enemy monsters.  This formula presents a nice balance between exploration and combat, however Epic has confirmed that you can sleep through the combat segments if you’re more interested in the exploring and gathering.

The games basic enemy unit is a zombified looking creature called a Husk.  This enemy tries to overwhelm players’ structures with their numbers, while other units such as Smashers, who are big brutish looking creatures, try to pummel their way through your bases walls.  In order to keep these fiendish creatures at bay, players will have to gather better materials from the world and constantly upgrade their bases.

Fortnite isn’t due for release until 2013 however we can expect a beta period leading up to the launch.  As of now Fortnite is listed as a PC exclusive title, however Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski stated that Fortnite is PC primary and that they “wouldn’t rule out the possibility of other platforms later.”  Although radically different from the Gears of War series, Fortnite looks to be a promising title that taps into the inner architect of us all.  Be sure to check out some of the screens below, and stay tuned to NGN for all the latest on this title as well as all the latest in gaming news.
