News: Do you want Hideo Kojima working on the Metal Gear Solid script?

by

After recent news that Universal Studios has begun to bring in Double Dragon the movie’s Avi Arad to work on the Metal Gear Solid movie, Hideo Kojima has reportedly talked about wanting to work on writing in the Metal Gear Solid movie.

At the Tokyo Game Show, the announcer of the Metal Gear Solid movie stated that the movie was something fans were hoping for. Kojima replied, “Me? I didn’t ask for it.” Kotaku attended the announcement. Although, they put in parentheses that he probably was, they could not tell if Kojima was joking, when he said this.

Even with many long cutscenes, Hideo Kojima wanted to make it clear, ”I want to make a movie, but Metal Gear Solid is a game,” Kojima said. “It was created as a game.”

Kojima later mentioned on his twitter that he misspoke when he stated that he wanted to be director of the movie. Kojima did mention before at the Art of Video Games exhibit at the Smithsonian:

“If it [Metal Gear Solid] were to be made into a movie it would have to be something completely new. I wouldn’t use my current scripts. I think I’d have to get somebody to get a new script and somebody else to direct it as a movie. This is always something in the back of my mind, so I’m always thinking about it. I can’t really say too much right now, but I’m working on something and I hope in the near future I’ll have something to announce.”

I wholly support Kojima as a director for the Metal Gear Solid movie. He may not have experience in it, but has has created animated cutscenes and created the game as a collage based off of movies such as The Fury, James Bond, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Deer Hunter; he created MGS in a manner only George Lucas could when he produced the original Star Wars trilogy.

I think the issue with video games as a medium now, is that you can have these 80s superhuman pulp action heroes, saving an entire world every day and still act as a tough guy smoking a cigarette while none of the bad guys notice that you smell of nicotine, while you never get to wonder about the human that suffers every day. Is Solid Snake indeed human considering all the people’s he’s killed and loved ones he’s lost with no time to react? Films are known for two things: showing, which Kojima can do, and drama, which is a mystery at the moment.
