Tales from the Borderlands: Episode Three – Catch a Ride is one of the best episodes Telltale has created for any series. The strong cast continues to shine, new characters instantly feel at home, and the humor is on point, yet again. Episode three further proves that Tales from the Borderlands is Telltale’s best series yet, and it raises the bar for a series that already had it set high.

Taking place right after last episode’s cliffhanger, Rhys and Fiona are escaping from Vasquez, August, and their respective goons. Depending on who you chose to trust in the last episode, your interactions could be vastly different. I chose to trust Fiona last episode, so it seemed a lot of the story focused on Rhys and Fiona’s trust for one another.

Deal with it.

This episode separates Rhys and Fiona into two separate groups with each trying to complete a task to aid the other group. This back and forth scene swapping offers some great humor and keeps the pace fast and entertaining.

Telltale has done a great job of populating Tales from the Borderlands with a likable and hilarious cast, and it only continues to grow, especially with the adorable and instantly lovable Gortys. Gortys’ innocent and child-like wonder is hilarious with the depressing backdrop of Pandora, and the relationship between Gortys and Loaderbot is one of my favorite relationships in the entire game.

There’s a segment in Catch a Ride which puts you in control of Rhys as he is accompanied by another character. You can choose to try and court her with Rhys’ charm, or you can simply continue the mission. I adored being able to form my personal Rhys in segments like this, as there’s also segments as Fiona that help add your own personal spin to each character.

By the end of this episode, our heroes are in serious trouble, and it leaves the biggest cliffhanger we’ve seen, so far. While it was once hard to believe any character could die, now it seems Telltale could pull the trigger on someone, or worse yet – make you choose in the next episode.

Like most Telltale games, the performance of the engine hiccups during scene changes, and it’s especially troublesome during the heavy quick time events that have become commonplace in Tales from the Borderlands.

By the end of Tales from the Borderlands: Episode Three – Catch a Ride, the series finally puts our main heroes in serious peril and left me nervous for their fates in episode four. We’ve gone this far without much to worry about regarding Rhys, Fiona an co., but it seems like Telltale is finally prepping tough decisions to make their debut in their most light-hearted series, so far.
