Hollywood has been trying to expand it’s reach by adapting various types of media into movies.  We saw books, comics and television get adapted constantly but recently video games have been getting more attention, which live action adaptations were the best?  Continue on…

5. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – This was the first movie in the series and the movie was ok, but not great.  Jolie did a fair job in capturing the essence of Lara Croft but the story was fairly weak and really lacked the exploration that made the games great.  Since video games are so interactive those subtle game play elements are lost in translation but the film as a whole was okay.

4. Resident Evil – This was the first good video game movie that came out in my opinion.  Jovovich did a really nice job as Alice, and the settings seems to capture the feel of the video games.  The score was excellent, compliments of Marilyn Manson, and contributed the most to the films ambiance.  Unfortunately the story fell short and did too much borrowing and hinting from other games in the series.  If they stuck to the original game it would have been much better.

3. Silent Hill – This is the one film that I really enjoyed from the horror franchises.  Visually the film was great and there were some pretty scary moments mixed in there.  Of course the plot of the film still does a lot of borrowing from other games and had that been cut down a little it would have been better.  All in all the movie is worth a viewing, the characters and the plot are good and its based on a game which is great.

2. Mortal Kombat – The first movie was by far the best and despite a couple of flaws it was a good movie.  All the characters you would expect made appearances in the film and they didn’t change the costumes too much which made me happy.  It is a fighting game and they tried to string out a story about Mortal Kombat, which was thin, but the movie was fun to watch.

1. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time – This is by far the best video game movie around.  Hollywood actually took this one seriously and devoted a fair amount of money to the project.  The film was a great success and it was a good movie on top of it.  The story was much closer to the actual story of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and was just better all the way around.  There is still room for improvement but this is on the right track.
