I've been impressed with how much games like Battlefield 3 have gotten right. The gun mechanics are astoundingly detailed and the audio of both the explosions and the gunfire is pretty accurate. Though I will say that every developer seems to add WAY to much bass to the 5.56 round, CoD is especially bad at this, for almost all of their weapon effects. I think the realism they hype has much more to do with the visuals and the weapon mechanics, rather than soldiering or being in combat.
But I do agree, no one would want to play a truly accurate military FPS. Hell, if you made my Afghanistan deployment into a video game it would be 5% combat, 85% walking/hiking, and 10% smoking weed and cigarettes while playing XBOX... and I was a combat MOS.
