We have already reviewed WWE 2K15, and if you want to see what we thought of the game, check out the review here. The PS4 edition of this game is ultimately the same, but there were a few items that were different with this version. Those are the items that we are going to talk about specifically and leave the rest to our original review.

If you checked out our review, WWE 2K15 is a rather disappointing entry in 2K’s WWE series of games. There is a lot of content that was taken out of previous entries in the series and making a game smaller is rarely a good thing. Especially when you eliminate fan favorite characters or modes that were working well, fans are sure to dislike the game. Unfortunately, that is the case with WWE 2K15 and it is even more disappointing that these items were not addressed in the next generation version of WWE 2K15. This is essentially the same package in a slightly more appealing visual package.

If graphics are very important to you, and you absolutely have to play the next version of WWE 2K15, then this is definitely the version to buy. WWE 2K15 looks quite a bit better on the next generation version of the game. The textures look cleaner, the animations are smoother and the presentation is just noticeably better. The next gen version of the game also handle the facial textures better, so your characters look closer on the PS4 to the real people. This doesn’t always work out, but for some it does and that is reason enough for some. There are also a noticeable amount of new animations in the game, so you’ll get a greater variety of animations while pulling off moves. This really shouldn’t come as a surprise, but if you have a PS4 or Xbox One, and you want this game, this is the version to buy.

The only other addition to the game is the new MyCareer mode which is exclusive to the next gen game. In this mode, you can create a wrestler and start them out at the WWE training academy where you’ll learn how to be a wrestler and you’ll start to develop your character. Here you will engage in matches to earn money and points which allow you to become stronger and more competitive. Unfortunately, this mode is rather underwhelming and ask too much of the player, too early. You’ll be relegated to grinding matches for money and upgrade points just so you can make a small amount of progress outside the academy. This process is painfully slow and getting to the WWE takes forever. The mode also gives you a chance to play as the face or the heel which is great if you wanted to play as one or the other. Unfortunately, those opportunities are rare. In the end, the mode doesn’t feel worth the time it takes for you to develop a character. It takes a very long time and you’ll have to do a fair amount of grinding which is never fun to do.

The next gen version also includes the 2K Showcase which highlight two different rivalries in the WWE universe. The first rivalry is Triple H vs Shawn Michaels and the other is CM Punk vs John Cena. This mode allows you to take control of one of the members of the rivalry and play through the matches as history was made. In between matches, you see all the moments on film which give meaning to the matches you just played and to the ones you will play soon after. While these showcases really only appeal to fans of those four wrestlers, if you have any appreciation for the sport or for the wrestlers, this mode offers more than the create a wrestler mode. It is interesting to get a little further into the history of the WWE and it is a nice distraction if you care to put in the time.

Overall, there really isn’t much to justify repurchasing the game if you already have the previous version. The visual upgrades are nice, but they don’t do much for the core gameplay. There is the addition of the MyCareer mode and the 2K Showcase but those two items feel more like DLC than an upgrade to the game itself. Unfortunately, if you’ve been hoping that this version would bring something new to the existing package, you are going to have to wait until next year. This feels like a missed opportunity to right the wrongs that were present in the previous version of the game. Instead, we have a rehashed and slightly improved version of the same disappointing game. Unless you are a very big WWE fan that absolutely needs every version of the game, you may want to wait until next year’s version. That is unless you are going to buy the game but didn’t jump on the previous version, then this is the one to buy. No matter what you chose, WWE needs to go back to the drawing board.
