As part of an investor conference yesterday Nintendo president  Satoru Iwata revealed the best selling consoles in Japan, North America and Europe.

Unsurprisingly Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has maintained it’s dominance in the North American market while Sony’s PlayStation 3 has maintained second place with Nintendo’s own 3DS portable console coming in third. In Japan the 3DS has topped the hardware sales chart followed by the PS3.

Europe remains a Sony stronghold with the PS3 shifting between 50,000 and 100,000 units a week in that region followed by the 3DS, with sales of 30,000 to 50,000. The Xbox 360 came in a close third. Nintendo believes the PS3 will be the best selling console overall in Europe this year.

Speaking about the Japanese market Iwata commented “since this year started, we have seen Wii sales quickly losing momentum. In the home console market this year, Sony’s PlayStation 3 remains in good shape.” In the company’s home market the 3DS has shifted 65,000 to 120,000 units per week while the PS3 has remained strong, peaking at 70,000 consoles in week nine.
