Fans of “metroidvania” style games, let me give you a reason to celebrate.  Or at least you will have one sometime next year, as that is when it appears that Crystal Catacombs, being developed by Maxwell Jensen, will be released on Windows, Mac, and Linux, with possible iOS, Android, and XBLA ports to follow.

As of this writing, the Kickstarter campaign for the title has reached 126% of its funding goal of $7500 following an unsuccessful campaign in 2011, and still has 16 days to go.

Crystal Catacombs will be, as stated above, a “metroidvania” style game, which means it will have adventuring, exploring, and platforming elements.  One cool thing about this game, though, is that it will also have elements borrowed from the roguelike genre of games, which means that the level layouts, item locations, and monster placements will all be randomized each time you start a new game.  Also, the game will feature a retro pixilated look that seems to suit this style of game very well.

Maxwell has released the “extended goals” for the campaign, and they are as follows:

The delivery dates they have listed make it a little difficult to figure out when this game will actually be available, but I will ask Maxwell for clarification and post an update when I find out.
