In a tweet earlier this morning, comedy writer Anthony Burch announced that he will be leaving Gearbox to write a television series for Hulu:

The show in question is result of a partnership between Youtube special-effects wizard Freddie Wong, production company RocketJump and Lionsgate Television.  Rocket Jump is best known for their multiple seasons of the web-based show Video Game High School.

Hulu green-lit the new venture for Burch, Wong, and company, which is described as a “long-form comedy series.”  There’s no confirmation as to the nature of this series, or if it will mirror Wong’s usual dealings with video games and gaming culture.

Whatever this new comedy show ends up being, it’s the third series Hulu has ordered from Lionsgate.  Hulu is just one of many streaming services hedging their bets with brand-exclusive original programming.

Gearbox is the real loser here, as Burch was one of the major creative forces behind Borderlands 2.  Burch wrote the script and was responsible for a good amount of the game’s charm, wit, and memorable characters.

This news coincides with Gearbox’s announcement that they are beginning the crewing process for Borderlands 3’s development team, including writers.

Borderlands The Pre-Sequel just got a new DLC character, and Tales From The Borderlands will be getting its second episode some time soon.

On top of all that, Gearbox has announced next-gen ports of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, coming in March as The Handsome Collection.
